Durban is associated with two World Heritage Sites, found in the magnificent Drakensberg peaks and the games reserves in the Zululand bush. Supervised tours are widely available. Visitors may also be interested in wandering down to Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary, south of Durban. The sanctuary consists of open water combined with rolling lawns and gardens. A short walk reveals over 150 species of bird such as Spurwing Geese, the White Faced Duck and the Kingfisher. The Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve contains black, red and white mangroves as well as shrub and creeping plants. This is the home for some birds such as the Mangrove Kingfisher and the Natal Nightjar. The Burman Bush Nature Reserve contains ample bird and plant life. It has, like most of the reserves, modern toilet facilities as well as picnic grounds. The Crestholme Nature reserve features a spectacular cliff view, and a ravine sweeping down into a valley. The Glenhome Nature Reserve comprises grass, more birds and a swamp with a damn that marks the edge of a spectacular waterfall that drops down into a gorge. The Hawaan Forest Nature Reserve contains examples of primal forest and rare trees. Bush pigs, and velvet monkeys may be seen. |
